Cummins and Miller Family

This book is dedicated to all those fellow researcher's in my mother's birth family - hence the 'maternal' category. If you haven't been here before or know us, my mother Peggy was adopted. We have no past personal historical history with this line except what we have learnt from our massive network of family members. Along the way we have met and maintained relationships with cousin Toni in WA (Miller family), cousin Tim in Qld (Melrose family), cousin Sue (Melrose family), cousin Fay (Fritchley/Saich famiy), Gail (Mundy family).

Along the way we are gathering a massive internet family to whom we also acknowledge through this book, without you all we wouldn't have the information or family grounding that we have today. So, thank you!

MAJOR SURNAMES:

CUMMINS, Burke, Davis, Fritchley, Halliday, Hamilton, Irvine, Jones, Matthews, Miller, Melrose, Mundy, Prisk, Schofield, Sullivan, Wilkinson, Young

Here we have the maternal lineage which is broken into several groups again, please check the pedigree chart below to help guide you along the way, then the links for the family groups may be found underneath this

OUR ADOPTED 'LEGAL' FAMILY

aboriginal-flag.jpg

Bradshaw, FARRELL, Kim, Kinchella, Lewis, Murray

If you have read through other pages, you will know that my mother Peggy was adopted (click here for her adoption story)

The basics:
  • Peg was born to Patrick John CUMMINS and Cecilia CUMMINS (nee MILLER).

  • Virginia O'BRIEN (AKA LEWIS) nee FARRELL was an aboriginal and a war widow with no children, she was also a family friend of Cecilia when she adopted Peg. Yes it was a legal adoption through the proper authorities and no we have not been able to obtain any answers as to how the adoption was approved. It is in complete reverse to the stolen generation. *shrug* answers we will never have.

  • Virginia (Jean) then married a Canadian man Gerald Patrick GOODE in 1946 and had 1 son Gerald, apparently he went back to Canada and was never heard from again. Jean then lived with John David KINCHELA and had 4 more children. John David is the man Peg new as her father growing up.

I always thought that Gran's family were Biripi but a few years ago whilst passing through Kempsey we were chatting with cousins and they informed me that they were Daingatti. Maybe some cousins will come across this site and remember Peg and will help me out here :)

Alexander Farrell & Mary Agnes Bradshaw

This is my grandmothers family, a cousin from Kempsey has told me they are Daingatti (Dainggatti), from the research I had done I thought they were Biripi as Nan was born at the Railway Reserve, Walcha.

If anybody can help me out with this, I would gladly receive your advice or assistance.

Mother's Adoption

Introduction...

aboriginal-flag.jpg

During 1996 I heard about the 'Gold Coast & Albert Genealogical Society' and thought to myself 'that would be worth joining'! Well boy was it ever, it opened up a gold mine for us. No more dabbling at the family research, I hit it with gusto and then my mother Peggy jumped on the band wagon, she turned out to be worse than me!! AND that is saying something.

Mum wrote this article below and it was published in the Gold Coast & Albert Genealogical Societies Journal "Rootes" in Dec 1997, Issue 47.

She has given her permission for me to publish it on this site to share with others who may be searching for their birth families in the hope of giving them some encouragement!

ADOPTED? YOU CAN DO IT TOO!!

By Peggy Lucas

Who said it's impossible?, you won't get very far in family research when you have been adopted and starting from no where!. Well FORGET that! I am here to tell you that they are wrong and I am the living proof that it can be done.

I was born in 1943 at Coffs Harbour and privately adopted three weeks later. In my teens I would ask my mother why I was so different from my brothers, sisters & cousins, her answer was always the same "you just are" & then walk away. You see I was a white baby adopted by an aboriginal woman who was widowed the year before. She went on to have 3 boys and 2 girls My mother died in 1992 & what little she told me turned out to be mostly lies.

When the adoption act was changed allowing you to apply for your natural birth certificate, my youngest daughter gave me the original for my birthday in 1991. With mixed feelings over the next few years we applied for my birth parents marriage & birth certificates, from these I was both excited & saddened to learn that I had an older sister & an aunt, they also gave me my grandparents names. For the first time in my life I felt as though I belonged to somebody. "That's the end of the story", I thought, WRONG!!

Last year when my daughter, Rhonda, heard about the Gold Coast Genealogical Society she decided to join and research her father's family tree. While she was at the society rooms I would baby sit my grand daughter. Now I have the patience of a saint, but when she came home jumping up and down yelling "guess what I found out today" l finally caught on that she was gathering information not only for her father's family but to my surprise my natural family too. My saint hood crumbled when she told me my maternal great grandmother's name was Zenobia Mundy, I jumped on the bandwagon too and haven't stopped since. Between the two of us and many hours of research we have succeeded in tracing Zenobia Mundy's family as far back as the 1600's in Cornwall and to the birth of my maternal g g grandfather George Robert Miller in London, but alas not his arrival in Australia. My father's branch of Cummins' has been difficult and we have not been able to go beyond his father's birth in Victoria, but we have not given up hope yet.

I must admit I have been absolutely fascinated by the family I never knew I had and yes I have found a couple of convicts with physical descriptions, 'isn't that fabulous?'. Rhonda has managed to go extremely wide on the tree including all our ancestor's related families. Through this method we have managed to make contact with 6 cousins throughout different branches of the tree and have met 2 of them so far, both living in Brisbane, and they have both welcomed us with open arms.

The grandson of my paternal g grandmother's eldest sister has opened his home and shared his family, photo's and stories with such loving warmth, he has warmed our hearts & made me feel connected, I finally belong to someone!. Mere words could never describe this wonderful person or my feelings for him. After our first visit to his home he sent me a letter and he said, "I am sending you an Irish scarf as a welcome gift to our family", if you can find the words to describe him please let me know. With the help of these relatives we have extended our tree even further, although we still haven't had any success in finding out what happened to my birth mother beyond 1946. I do know that my father died in 1966.

We have had success after success, along with the setbacks we all have from time to time. Never give up because we now have a copy of a half great aunt's birthday book entries of many family events, it was given to her by her aunt sometime in the late 1880's. We found the present owner of the book after scouring the journals from other societies. My daughter noticed an article written in 1993/94 regarding a book that had come into a lady's possession who was trying to find any descendants so the book could have a home and she listed entries regarding the King & Miller families. What a find it turned out to be, you guessed it, confirmation to keep us moving along. Funnily enough Rhonda had already sent a letter to the lady to see if she kept a record of who she passed the book on to and while waiting for an answer was talking to Roma Waldron, writer of Pioneers, Settlers & Families in Northern NSW, and mentioned the book. Roma she said she knew about it & who had it, guess who?? It was herself so we also found and confirmed another relative. Roma kindly allowed us to photocopy this book and for this we will be eternally grateful as it is the only thing that we have that belonged to an ancestor, but not the last I hope.

Do you still believe an adopted person can have no luck in tracing a family tree?

PS
After spending a very futile and frustrating day at the society on Saturday 20 September I came home feeling blue & down in the dumps. I checked the answering machine and a dream came true, some would even say it was a miracle, I know both my daughter's do. There was a message from a gentleman Rhonda had written to saying he may be able to help in our search. My youngest daughter had to come over & be with me because I could not return the call without her love & support to hold me together. NO, not my mother, aunt or sister but a younger brother of my father, Thomas Cummins. MY UNCLE TOM is 85 & not in the best of health, he also lives right down the bottom of Victoria & I need another miracle if I'm ever going to meet him. Here's hoping the 'Angel' that has been guiding me in my research is still with me & can perform another miracle.

The Meetings

If you have taken the time to read through our other pages you will have noticed that Uncle Tom passed over in 2000. Sadly we didn't get to spend a lot of 'physical' time with him, but we did talk almost every week.

During 1998 we bought an old caravan, which we worked on and registered (now known as the 'Granny Van') and Uncle Tom sent us his car to haul the thing down to Victoria to meet him. In that tiny 16' van Peggy, my son DC, daughter Gina and I survived for 3 months! An amazing fact, believe me!

When we arrived in Wonthaggi, Vic it was fantastic! Uncle Tom & mum took one look at each other and burst into tears, it was emotional, spiritual and beautiful. And they even look alike.

During the time that we were renovating the caravan we kept on with our research and with the information Uncle Tom had given us, electoral roles, phone books and a lot of investigating we also found that Aunt mum referred to above living in Geelong, Vic and we found her sister Trish living in Augusta, WA and an older brother she didn't know about also living in Fremantle, WA along with a younger half brother also in WA.

Unfortunately her mother had passed over in 1959.

After we left Uncle Tom we traveled over to Perth, the four of us in that van!! GRRRRRR But we survived! Even with me towing it, but that is another story, we did have our DRAMA's along the way. But we did get to meet everybody and we also visited my grandmothers grave and great grandparents whom had also passed over in WA.

On the whole we had a ball and that is how we have come to be living in our vehicles and travel around doing research when time permits. We have picnics in cemeteries regularly. It is a pretty awesome site to come across a little country cemetery with a car hauling a caravan and a 36' bus parked outside with a couple of ladies driving and two kids in tow! Actually this is what happened at Wingham Cemetery, NSW in 2001 when a funeral procession turned up! Poor people didn't know what was going on!

Well that's a dedicated genealogists life!

PS. The best thing about the trip to WA was that we also met a cousin Toni and her family and she had the family photo album from our Great Grandmother Emily May. Toni has even allowed us to borrow the album to try and sort out who is who and make copies of the photos. Toni, we love you and thank you!

George Melrose ~ Surveyor

Obituary Notice from Sydney Morning Herald, August 20th, 1903.

Mr. George Melrose, Licensed surveyor, died at his residence, at Ashfield, early on Tuesday morning, in his 74th year, and his remains were interred yesterday (Wednesday) in St John's Church of England Cemetery, Ashfield, in the presence of his sons, Messrs. John, George, Thomas, and Reginald Melrose, and other members of his family, also Mr. H. Deane, Engineer-in-Chief; Mr C. O. Burge, Principal Assisting Engineer; Mr. Hutchinson, Inspecting Engineer; Mr. D. C. Simpson, Divisional Engineer; Mr. C. Wilkin, Interlocking Engineer; and numerous friends, including a large number of officers of the the Works Department. Mr. Melrose, together with the late Messrs. H. Quodling, A.Francis, G. Jamieson, and several others, came from England in 1853 with Captain Hawkins, to make land surveys in Tasmania, on the completion of which in 1856, Captain Hawkins and his staff, including Mr. Melrose, were transferred, at the request of Governor Denison, to the service of the Imperial Government in this State; to make surveys of the projected extensions of the then existing railway to Parramatta, which had only been opened in the previous September.

At various times he was engaged on the surveys of all main trunk lines of railway and their branches, including the difficult portion of the Great Western Railway across the Blue Mountains, embracing the Lapstone-hill and Great Zig-Zag, the former of which has been superseded by a tunnel.

Mr. Melrose was thus one of the pioneer railway surveyors, and closely identified with the growth of the railway system in New South Wales.

MILLER BACKGROUND...

How the Millers came to be in Australia we still haven't discovered!!!

Maybe they swam???

This is definitely one of my brick walls!

From detective work thus far I believe that George & his brother Thomas arrived via Tasmania as Thomas resided, married and had children there. After his wife's death he moved to Bingara, NSW to live near his brother George.

REVISION: 1.1

Today (1 Feb 2007) I was finally given irrefutable proof that the William John Miller that married Kate Evelyn Chapple is indeed NOT the William John Miller born to George Robert Miller, so this little bit here needs to be removed from the gedcom which I am furiously working on and updating over the next few days...

NOTES
1 Geo R Miller registered birth of Charles; previous issue: 3 others, living.
2 An A. O. Hayles registered the birth of Frederick and stated that the previous issue were:
5 girls and 5 boys.

I believe that A. O. Hayles did us a favour here and supports the theory that this particular George Robert is the same father as the first lot. If you add in the girl Mary in Tasmania and include Mary Ann Brown and you have 10 children. i.e. Jane, Mary, Caroline, Elizabeth & Mary (from Mary Ann Brown nee Jones) you get five girls. Thomas, George R, Henry, Charles & William make up the five boys. Whoever this Hayles person was probably had no idea that Mary Ann was not the mother of all the kids.... Food for thought....

3 Geo R Miller registered birth of David; previous issue: Henry 8, Charles 6, William 4, Frederick dec'd.
4 The range in years for Williams birth is because the Clerk at Rookwood Asylum where he died states that he was 62 in 1924.
But on David's birth cert in 1863, George (father) stated that he was 4 in March that year, which would make his birth year 1858/1859.
5 Mary Ann Miller born 6 Feb 1839, Launceston, Tas. Parents Mary Ann & George Robert Miller...we must bare in mind that George's brother Thomas lived in Tas.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
MARRIAGE #1 OR NOT?

George Robert Miller
married Mary Anne LYNCH 30/1/1837 (M1837/1826-21), both free, witnessed by Margaret Lynch, Joseph Henry Winchester.

Mary Ann Miller died 20/2/1849 (D1849/323-117), aged 27, arrived Marq. Wellington. Occ. Innkeeper.

MARRIAGE #2 OR NOT?
George Robert Miller married Harriet COOPER 25/6/1849 (V1849/735-79), listed as a Bachelor. Witnesses were Thomas Miller (his brother) of Hobart Town & William Wade of Maitland.

Harriet Miller died 4/5/1851 - at the White Conduit House Inn, aged 19 yrs + 4 months, Wife of George Miller. (D/notice in Maitland Mercury 7-5-1851).

The witness here, I believe is Thomas Tringham Miller, George Robert's brother who was married in Tasmania in 1845 to Mary Ann Usher (M1567-7) at Hobart Town. On Thomas' death certificate in 1893, Marion Horne (Mary Ann nee Brown) stated that Thomas had been in the colony of NSW for 20 years. She also mistakenly said that his father was her step father George Robert Miller.

MARRIAGE #3 OR NOT?
George Robert Miller married Mary Ann BROWN 21/8/1854 (M1854/70-81), witnessed by Mary Jane & Frances Blain (minister's wife)

George Robert Miller died 1883 (D1883-8261). Informant: Henry Miller, son.
Issue: Henry 30, Charles 28, William 26.
No mention of previous marriage.

Mary Ann Miller formerly BROWN nee JONES died 1897 (D1897-3). Informant: Henry Miller, son.
Issue:
1st marriage: Mary Ann Brown 49
2nd marriage: Henry 43, Charles, 41, William 35; 2 females deceased (should be males i.e. Frederick & David .

* If I was a child to any of the above I would have been confused regarding my mothers maiden name!! No doubt it was no different then, although why Henry and Charles put Singleton is beyond me, especially when Mary Jones was still alive, unless George played up with yet another Mary Ann??

*** In 1849 when Mary Ann Lynch died, George would have found it hard raising 5 or 6 children on his own so would have promptly remarried, then his 2nd wife Harriet died 2 years later. He probably persevered with the
help of family ad friends and then married for the third time to Mary Ann Jones.

****** Another point worth noting is that there is a diary/birthday book "The Birthday Book of Fate" in the
possession of Roma Waldron that belonged to an Evelyn Amanda Elizabeth King who was the daughter of Elizabeth Miller (from the first marriage above) and Reuben King. This book mentions the following details among many other's:

1. Aunt Miller died 4 Aug 1886 at 12.04am. No idea who this is.

2. George Robert Miller born 13th May 1815 (2 years out s/be 1813).

3. Thomas Miller born 11 June 1811.

4. Saw Mrs M A Miller 13 March 1895, Wednesday 9pm train, West end of Tamworth.

5. Elizabeth King born 4 Feb 1847.

Before this information presented itself I was leaning towards several different George & Mary's but now I am narrowed down to the possibility of 2 myself.

Bare in mind that Evelyn is the daughter of Elizabeth & Reuben King.
Elizabeth being the daughter of George Robert Miller & Mary Ann ? (HILL according to death cert.) Now, George Robert Miller Jnr b. circa 1843 with no birth certificate to provide details has stated at his marriage that his parents were George Robert Miller & Mary Ann HILL.
Caroline Priscilla has no mother mentioned for marriage or death.
Thomas' parents are George & Mary Ann at birth BUT George Robert & Mary Ann GIBB at marriage and George Robert & Mary Ann DELISER at death. Go figure on that one.
Throw Jane in for good measure with George Robert and Mary Ann NORMAN stated on her death.

In all of the above instances the'Robert' is the key I believe. I also believe that George may have done his
apprenticeship as a 'Carpenter/Cabinetmaker' and yes I personally would include Upholsterer as Carpenter i.e. once you have made a chair you then upholster it. Even though he ventured into Innkeeping his TRADE or CALLING was always Cabinetmaker.

WHAT DO YOU THINK????? THREE GEORGE'S????

1. George Miller & Mary Ann NORMAN
( Robert also mentioned here)
2. George Miller & Mary Ann (GIBB & DELISER; Robert also mentioned here)
3. George Robert Miller & Mary Ann HILL

??? Has anybody searched for a copy of the marriage
license for Jane Miller & William Jones?
